Jo Coupe

By: kon

"Jo Coupe studied at Newcastle University and Goldsmiths College. She lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne. Her work tackles the complex relationship between life, death, growth and decay and invades the spheres of the Victorian enthusiast, amateur scientist and jeweller. She works in materials as diverse as chalk, vinegar, fruit and bronze."

I came across her work through a friend who will exhibit her soon hopefully. She is influenced especially by nature and organic processes and recreates such processes in a seemingly inappropriate environment. Her work actually "lives", it does something, which probably doesn't help if you want to display it in your home, but adds a quality that I find remarkable. Where Damion Hirst displayed organic art for the sake of sometimes gruesome attraction and sensation, Jo Coupe is more interested in reactions and cycles derived from natural processes. My favourite one is the fruit on a table, where the decaying fruit triggers little saws which again eventually saw off the legs of the table. A self-destructive piece...

Amazing paper scultptures by Richard Sweeney

By: Filip

A wonderful collection of paper sculptures by Richard Sweeney.

We had a very similar short project with 1st year Architecture students at University of Westminster where they created plant inspired structures using only paper and paperclips. Results were not as sofisticated as these but nevertheless very intersting.

Richard Sweeney is definetly a worthy reference when it comes to making objects out of paper.

Words by the artist:
As well as being driven by the material, the forms I produce are influenced by my keen interest in the photography of architecture and natural forms. Elements of repetition within architecture are very appealing to me, I’m drawn to the way structures can be produced with sets of repeating elements, each of which is simple in its own right, yet contributes to create a complex and rigid structure. This is most apparent in bridges, especially those of Santiago Calatrava, where form and structure become one; all the elements of construction are exposed and composed to create a beautifully flowing sculptural form.

Helvetica - A Documentary Film

By: Filip

Helvetica - A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit.

Not sure if you know, but Helvetica is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. A font that hase been around for many years and its pretty much everywhere. There isn't a day we dont read something written in Helvetica and this movie is reflection of this and the subject as a whole on how type plays a part in our every day life.

Here is some info on the film:
Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica will screen at film festivals, museums, design conferences, and cinemas worldwide, followed by the DVD release this fall. More about the film...

Happy 50th Helvetica!!

Studio Libertiny’s Bee Vase

By: Filip

I came accross this today via Inhabitat. A trully wonderful piece of (if it can be called) product design that steers away from mass production and uses organic process of bees to create this trully wonderful object. It was made by 40,000 bees over the one week. Studio Libertiny constructed a vase-shaped hive that the bees then colonized, building a hexagonal comb to encompass the existing form.

Here is a quote from Inhabitat they found from Tomas Gabzdil Libertiny via Dezeen:

I have been interested in contradicting the current consumer society (which is interested in slick design) by choosing to work with a seemingly very vulnerable and ephemeral material - beeswax. To give a form to this natural product it has occurred more than logical to choose a form of a vase as a cultural artifact. Beeswax comes from flowers and in the form of a vase ends up serving flowers on their last journey.

At this point I asked myself a question: “Can I make this product already at the place where the material originates?” My ambition to push things further led me to alienate the process by which bees make their almost mathematically precise honeycomb structures and direct it to create a fragile and valuable object – like a pearl. This takes time and time creates value.

Fantastic!!

James Brooks "Face Invasion" Exhibition: Berlin

By: Filip

A friend of Allmightys on MySpace is having an exhibition in Berlin from 28th April until 5th May 2007.
If you are in the area, definetly stop by - really interesting work.

Words by Jay:
I'm Jay/James Brooks, an Artist/Designer/Illustrator/Photographer based in London.

I draw inspiration from the streets around me, and find beauty in unloved and abandoned buildings and places. My medium varies, but you will usually find me with an ink pen/quill and a polaroid camera, maybe even a spraycan. I try to use different materials as I feel it gives greater freedom of expression.

I have worked with K-swiss producing a pair of custom trainers for the '06 summer tour, a top UK publisher visually documenting and writing about street art, a London based music management company working on various design projects, and many others.

You can see more of Jay's work on his MySpace page or his website here

By: Filip

In the spirit of our current "Mother Nature" competition, tomorrow is "Earth Day'. Earth Day is about bringing environmental awareness around the world. It is the day when we all should have a little think about it and maybe decide to make at least one little change in the way we do things.

Now, how big is your carbon footprint? :)

Pigs at the printers

By: Allmightys Team

We want to show you where the shirts are printed:

We use a cool screenprinter in Berlin-Kreuzberg. It's run by a bunch of fun blokes who are really good at what they are doing.
I am very happy with the shirts they did for the first competition... wait and see :)

Here are some images, so you know where (and how) it's happening...(the screen they are working on is that for 'pigs against racism')

Something about the technique:

A screen is made of a piece of porous, finely woven fabric (originally silk, but typically made of polyester or nylon since the 1940s) stretched over an aluminum frame. Areas of the screen are blocked off with a non-permeable material—a stencil—which is a positive of the image to be printed; that is, the open spaces are where the ink will appear.

The screen is placed on top of a piece of dry paper or fabric. Ink is placed on top of the screen, and a squeegee (rubber blade) is used to push the ink evenly into the screen openings and onto the substrate. The ink passes through the open spaces in the screen onto the paper or fabric below; the screen is lifted away and then the squeegee is pushed back across the screen, with the screen lifted, "flooding" the ink into the screen. The screen can be re-used after cleaning. If more than one color is being printed on the same surface, the ink is allowed to dry and then the process is repeated with another screen and different color of ink.

Allmightys Update: Voting Now LIVE

By: Allmightys Team

Hello All,

Here is a little update on what is going on in the next few days.

First of all, we have received some great designs and are really excited about them. We think it is going to be a very close call. Different to the previous competition, we will keep everyone up to date via the blog on how the competition is doing and which designs are in the lead. We think this is important so you can see what you need to do (get friends to vote) to push your designs up.

So,

Voting is now LIVE

Here you can score all the designs on the scale from 0-5. Zero is off course no points and 5 is maximum points. Top designs are calculated on the basis of average score. In other words, if 5 people vote with 5 points for that design, that person number of points is 25 and average score is 5. (25 divided by number of votes). Designs with the highest average score win. At the same time if one design recieved 5 points and only one person has voted for them, they will have the same score as the person who has had 5 voters. Reason for this is so everyone has a fair count.

So, score as many designs as you can. Every vote counts.

Simple as that. Please also don't forget that you need to register before you can vote.

We will keep an update in the blog on how the designs are doing
, to be more exact we will publish six designs with highest average scores.

This will happen on:
Thursday 19th April, Monday 23rd April and Thursday 26th April.

Voting ends in exactly two weeks: on Monday, 30th April.

During this time, we should have collected enough votes to decide 3 winners.

We will print 3 winning designs, Gold, Silver and Bronze and the designers get commission once we start selling. Originally, we wanted to print other designs too but the designers wouldn't gain commissions. We are changing that. We believe that all designers deserve commissions from their artwork.
From now, all other chosen designs will get commissions on each shirt we sell over the first 100. Commission is 0.50 EUR on each shirt sold. The reason why it is over 100 is to give more credit to the bronze winner.  We will announce who these designers are once the voting is finished.

As this competition is so closely related to the present environmental issues we are facing on this earth, we will be donating 1 EURO for each 'Mother Nature' t-shirt sold to 'Friends of the Earth' charity organisation.

Something about Friends of the Earth:
http://www.foei.org/
Friends of the Earth International is the world's largest grassroots environmental network, uniting 71 diverse national member groups and some 5,000 local activist groups on every continent. With approximately 1.5 million members and supporters around the world, we campaign on today's most urgent environmental and social issues. We challenge the current model of economic and corporate globalization, and promote solutions that will help to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies.

So, exciting times are ahead. Enjoy these beautiful designs and if you have any questions or comments, please let us know.

Yours,

Allmightys Team

Build Your Own Lamp

By: Filip

Love the idea to build your own products. This is a fantastic solution to adding something extraordinary to your home.

Info on the product:
The Designer Emulation Kits (DEK’s for short) are meant as the sincerest homage to some of the greatest modern designers of our time. The lamps and designers being “emulated” have a particular importance. They are represented in countless design tomes extolling the various movements, and they are held up as prime examples of “good design.”

- Arco kit: is based on the classic Arco by Achille Castiglioni. A ubiquitous symbol of good taste, and universally recognized...
- Lucellino kit: was inspired by Ingo Maurer’s Lucellino. Why make it the first in the series? The originator of the DEK’s, Mark McKenna, took his first professional job as a member of the Ingo Maurer team.
- Tizio kit: takes the form of the famous Tizio by Richard Sapper.  This is the most challenging DEK to put together...
