Two are better than one

By: Kon

I came across this phone-becomes-TV idea today. The designer Seokwon Hong at Yanko has thought of Brix, a phone which turns into a TV. In order to avoid you being stuck with a small screen that will display very little, their idea is that several Brix owners can put her phones together to create a big-screen TV. The entire surface of the Brix phone is one touch-screen display.

The idea is very democratic and seems nice and I like the various possibilities in which you can arrange the phones, like widescreen and extra information screens, but I think the difficulties that will arise are self explanatory... I can imagine dialogues like "But I want to watch....."

LICHTFAKTOR

By: Filip

Check out these very cool light graffiti ...i don't think I've seen them so three-dimensional before. It's also very interesting to see the way they experiment with different types of light sources. Whilst some are very light, others thick and patterened. Very cool indeed..

In some ways I can't help feel a little disappointing that the only way to enjoy them is to see them flat in the forms of photographs. Few years back, we had a student who was experimenting with Maya by attaching particle emitters to already available motion paths of dancers. Some really cool effects would come out of it and these particle paths would "live forever" so you end up with a sculpture like object you can explore three dimensionally in Maya.  Surely, this requires a lot less patience as I am sure this kind of light graffiti are a lot harder to produce.

RSS, What's That All About?

By: Filip

We have been wanting to do a post about RSS for a while now but never seem to got around to it. With so much fun and interesting stuff out there somehow posting about RSS doesn't sound so fun. In any case, RSS is something i pretty much live by, day in, day out. An hour doesn't go by when I am in front of computer that I don't resort to RSS.
So, for our dear members who do not know what RSS is, this post is dedicated to you. If you are already familiar with RSS you can skip the What is part and maybe just check out the list of readers below.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is, in simple terms, a feed format use to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news, photos, movies, podcasts.
Now, what does that mean to you? Every day, we visit at least 5-10 sites ..for us, hard core surfers, we may visit 50. Everyone has their favourite websites, whether this be BBC news, Times, Guardian, CNN, Gizmondo, some blog you like reading, and so on. It can be quite time consuming going through each one of those sites to see what's on, checking the latest news and reading the latest blog posts. This is where RSS comes in. RSS is a simple method of pushing site updates to your preferred "News Reader".
You load up all your RSS feeds in your News Reader and it will update automatically for you listing all the recent posts/news on all of your favourite sites. This means that with the simple use of arrow keys on your computer you can browse the latest updates on your favourite sites. Things don't just stop there, you can subscribe to "photo casts" and get latest photos from your friends photo library on flickr straight to your desktop. If you are interested in the particular news item, you just click and the application will send you straight to that webpage. RSS is the best thing since sliced bred ...I guarantee it! :)

So, now that we know what RSS is for , how do i get it?...
Most modern browsers now automatically recognise RSS feeds on websites. You will usually see a feed icon somewhere, if not in the address bar, then on the site. You click on it, and your favourite RSS app will pick up the feed. From there on, you are set to go.

This is where we talk about the RSS readers. There are two types, the applications and the web based ones.
Here I outline some apps and below some web ones. There are millions, so i will try to stick to what i think are the best.

MAC Net News Wire (Lite Version FREE)
I would say the best out there. I use this at least 50 times a day...and it syncs with the web version so you can read your news anywhere.
and some other ones News Fire  , Vienna (FREE), Shrook (FREE)

WINDOWS NewzCrawler, FeedDemon, Omea Reader

WEBBASED, NewsGator, BlogLines , GoogleReader (FREE)
If you have a google account, googlereader is for you

Now, download you favorite reader and subscribe to Allmightys RSS feed to stay up to date with all the latest news. Subscribe Here

Only drawback is that the supported software so far is only Windows XP and 2000.

So far, here is the info and stats for this piece of nostalgic equipment.

BLU

By: Kon

BLU is a street artist from Italy, who travels the world to put up his sometimes huge hands, monsters and faces on inviting walls. The scale of these drawings is impressive and the effect likewise.
Take a look at his dairy on his well made webpage and follow the list of his work all around the globe.

Retro Watches - Museum

By: Filip

Not to worry, this doesn't mean just because our current theme is "Once Upon a Time.." that we are going all retro with the blog posts...we might a little :) ...but this is really cool..

I remember when i was about 6 years old my parents just got back from Tokyo and got me one of those casio watches with a game on it. For the hell of me i can't remember what game it was but looking at these watches now i wish I still had it.

Meeting Up with Yonil and Artist Self-Promotion

By: Filip

I got an email from Yonil few days ago telling me that he is in London at the moment on a short trip with his girlfriend. I thought it would be a fantastic idea to meet up and finally meet him in person. He came around to the office (WAG) on Wednesday and we went to the local pub to have a pint or two. We talked about many things, mainly T-Shirt production, recent changes to the site and general improvements and also the artist "self-promotion".

We talked about the different places where artists can market their work and I promised to send a number of websites where artists do a lot of self-promotion and where i thought all artists should pretty much be. Most of these site have very large audiences and its definitely worth creating your own profiles.

Some of these may be the obvious for some of us but i think its good to list them for all anyway.
Here they are:

OMG...where do we start...A lot in this update ... New competition themed ""Once Upon A Time.." is up, New Design Forum feature added, New Tee Colours, Comments added to Voting, Number of Times Scored now visible during voting, changes to rules and lots of other little improvements.

Summary of all new features:

-Template Updated with new Tee colours
-New Design Forum Feature Added
-You can now post topics for discussions
-Your designs (old and new) are now available for comment
-On the voting page you can now switch between thumbnails view and comments (default)
-Your designs now include descriptions in the forum
-Your designs now include detail info about your submission (date)
-Number of times scored is now visible during voting.
-Design Description now visible in the Design Forum.
-You can now resubmit designs before the voting starts. Your old submissions will be "Retired"

Rules Change [IMPORTANT]
-Winners are no longer chosen by score only.
-Winning designers will be decided by Allmightys Team using the following criteria:
    1. Average Score
    2. Member Comments
    3. Rating of Votes (We take into account zero (0) slamming)
-Terms and Conditions are updated to reflect these changes. read more here.

DETAIL

New Rules
Round 1 = Submissions (Design Forum),   Round 2=Voting/Scoring
Submissions now need to be approved to go into Round 2, the Voting/Scoring. No longer just Allmightys Team decides whether designs meet "minimum criteria", it is also you who decide by submitting comments on designs.
The criteria for a winning design will be a combination of factors including (but not limited to) the average score of each design, the rating of votes cast for each design and the comments made for each design. No longer only average scores decide the winners.

Design Forum
As you can see, a new menu has been added called "Design Forum". Here you can find all the designs ever submitted to Allmightys and you can post comments on any of the designs, new or old. Think of the forum as a round 1. Based on your comments designs will be approved/rejected to go into the second and final round of voting. Unsuccessful designs will have a chance to resubmit before the voting starts.  Your comments are used as one of the deciding factors whether the design goes into voting and if it wins.

Voting
You can now comment on all designs during voting.
Score and Comment! Both Count!

We can now see detailed information on when you submitted!
You can now switch between the comments view and thumbnails to see all designs.

We hope you enjoy these new feature. If you have any comments, as always, please let us know.

walk2web

By: Kon

Among all the navigation sites on the net, this one must be ranking high above all others!

walk2web is a lot of fun to browse through: the graphic animations are cool (the little foot that does the walking) and it gives you a good overview to all the links on your site. The latest posts are uploaded automatically and in the site window you have all the digg, stumble upon and del.icio.us links that you need.
You can also increase/ decrease the rating of the site that you're looking at...
Only problem seems to be displaying flash files.

Very cool!!  check it out here...

Unfortunately the sales links seem to be out of order... I don't know if this is temporary or they are not for sale anymore, although it says otherwise...
Some beautiful models among them :)

More Cassette Tape Cool Stuff

By: Filip

If you recall our post about Cassette tape Nostalgia few months ago...here is something really cool on designboom: cassette tape culture

Extract:
these days it is hard to avoid the continuing debate that surrounds the 'future of music' and the formats that bring it to us. however this so called 'digital age' isn't the first time that new music formats have created such a stir, some time not too long ago it was cassette tapes that were causing the music industry concern.the design of the cassette tape was resolved in the 1960s by the dutch electronics company philips
as a portable alternative to the large vinyl formats...read more

Friday Animation: Over Time

By: Kon

Here is a beautiful animation- a tribute to the Muppet Show and most of all it's inventor, Jim Henson.
In the film a number of what looks like Kermit's siblings have to come to terms with their creator's death.
Set in 20's style black and white, this little movie is a wonderful and lovingly made tribute to the big man in creature animation...

Make Your Own Moleskine-Like-Notebook

By: Filip

Here is one great guide for everyone. We all have lots of scrap paper lying around. For us in the office the pile is getting larger each day even though we are very conscious when we hit that print button.

This is a fantastic way to make use of that scrap paper. This is my next task, to use all the stacked scrap paper and make new sketch books. I don’t even mind that one side is always gonna have a print out on it because  what better way to start a new sketch than with an old drawing underneath.

I am really looking forward to this ...i just gotta do it now.

Allmightys Update

By: Allmightys Team

A little update on what's going on at Allmightys at the moment.
We are working on a number of things and they are taking quite a bit of our time ..
First of all is a number of new pages we would like to include in the site which we think our new members will benefit most from. These pages are: A Guide to Designing TShirts and also A Guide to Voting. We think there are many new users out there who are not familiar with the processes and what better way to show them but to create pages only dedicated to this.
Second are the new features. We've been very hard at work on these and our developers are working on implementing them as we speak. These features relate to Voting and Submitting designs so we want to finish them before the new competition goes up. At the moment, we are looking at 2 weeks, but please don't hold us to it as these things take a lot of tweaking and testing. It will be worth the wait! :)
Thirdly, a neat little feature that we think you all will love. It's for all of us..nothing major, but fantastic and we can't wait to show it off to you.
And fourth, getting your wonderful tees printed as soon as possible. The colours have been decided, printers have been informed and it won't be long before they are in store.

So, stick around, a lot coming in the next few weeks and off course, if you have any suggestions, let us know.

p.s. Any theme suggestions for our next competition?

Anymails: Visualising Emails

By: Filip

Anymails is a project representing emails as microbes in a graphical form. Very interesting..especially how these emails suddenly develop a life of their own. I just love the way they move and almost interact. It would be even more interesting if suddenly they would evolve or merge...in the form of tasks we undertake after reading emails.

ANYMAILS

About:
Anymails is a visualization of my received emails.
I have investigated how I can use natural metaphors to visualize my inbox, its structure and attributes. The metaphor of microbes is used. My objective is to offer the user another experience of his email world.

The project was developed during the MFA thesis “Natural Metaphor For Information Visuzalization” (thesis.zip, PDF, 7mb) at the Dynamic Media Intitute Boston in 2007.

Transformers go audio

By: Kon

The favourite toys of the 80's, the Transformers, are making their cinema debut this summer! What a good occasion to revive the toys of the past and give them the update they need for this millenium:

Once they used to be fitted with a cassette player... the logical follow-up for today is the mp3 player (including an SD Card memory slot, headphone jack and audio controls).

It's great to see that all time classics like the transformers can make their revival and will once again fill the shelves in toystores! Some things are too good to be forgotten ;)

I'm sure this will make kids and grown-ups alike very happy :)

Kinetic Side Mirror Installation

By: Filip

A very interesting installation of car mirrors that not only produces great imagery but also the set-up analyses conditions and backgrounds and feedbacks that back to the viewers in the form of new imagery. You could call it a form of Interface. Well worth checking out.

aether.hu/aleph/

Concept
Aleph is an experimental public display, that is using the spaces, people and objects it faces as a palette to display messages from hidden viewpoints. When looking at a small mirror, it reflects a fraction of the space around us, when looking at a mirror façade, it reflects most things around us, containing segments that are dark or bright, red or green. But if we build a matrix of small mirrors, which can adjust their tilt according to the site they are facing, we can create a display that uses the ever changing flux of the place to show images from certain points in space.
