Competition Over...What's Next?
By: Allmightys Team
With Big City Life competition finished we are now working to get the winning designs printed and in the shop as soon as possible. This should take about a month or so but we will keep you posted how they are doing. We'll also try to grab some snaps whilst they are being printed too.
We've also had some queries over the weekend and this morning why your scores are not visible in the My Allmightys section (they are now) and the competition is over. We thought we address this issue publicly rather than replying to each email. We at allmightys work 24/7 on allmightys and are pretty much available any time, unless we are sleeping :) ...unfortunately, or fortunately for them, our web developers work Mon-Fri. Making scores visible was one of those things that needs to be done by the developers and the earliest they could do it was this morning. If you now go into your My Allmightys section you will see your average score and the number of voters. We hope this answers your queries....sorry no conspiracy here :)
We are also now working our way to the next competition. No themes in mind yet but we are now taking suggestions. We also have a little surprise (new feature) coming for the next competition so the gap might be a little longer between the competition as we want to implement these new features. We hope you will enjoy them and we think its gonna take the submitting of designs and voting for them to another level.
As always, if you have any suggestions, feature request or anything else you want to talk us about ..please do.

Big City Life : Results!
By: Allmightys Team
The results are finally here and what a fight it has been!
Again, we have received a large number of exceptional designs and thank you all for them!! The response to the topic was extremely varied. We actually hoped for this, as the Monsters & Mayhem competition showed us that there are so many brilliant minds and great designers out there who all develop their own, unique approach and style to a topic!
The great thing about having competitions (especially concerning design) is that you never know until the very last minute who will end up at the top… it is exiting to us as much as it is to you :) This competition has really been exciting and extremely unpredictable. We hope you like the winning designs and the following special selections.
We have decided to print 6 designs again: the three prize winners and three special selections. We have picked the special selections using the following merits: Average Score Results, Quality and execution of Design and coolness :)

Special Announcement : Designer Prizes
By: Allmightys Team
A few weeks ago we sent out our quarterly Designer Report to all the Allmightys designers. Of course, the gold, silver and bronze prize winners were pretty pleased with the money due to them from commissions. Unfortunately for the Special Selections they did not receive comissions because until now, they would only receive commissions after the first 100 tees sold. We are now changing that because we feel that everyone should be getting commissions from the start. In addition, €0.50 is just way too little so we are changing that too!!! Actually, why don’t we change the whole lot!! :) From now on the prizes are as follows:
GOLD PRIZE: € 2.00 for every shirt sold
SILVER PRIZE: € 1.50 for every shirt sold
BRONZE PRIZE: € 1.00 for every shirt sold
SPECIAL SELECTION: € 1.00 for EVERY shirt sold
What does this mean for the previous winners/special selections?
From this quarter (31st June) they will receive the above commissions for EVERY tshirt sold.
.....and this is not all!!!
LONG TERM COMMITMENT!
After 50 shirts sold, we are increasing commissions + designers receive a Free T-Shirt of their choice!!!
GOLD PRIZE: € 2.00 for every shirt sold
SILVER PRIZE: € 2.00 for every shirt sold
BRONZE PRIZE: € 1.50 for every shirt sold
SPECIAL SELECTION: € 1.50 for EVERY shirt sold
and then… after 250 shirts sold:
€ 2.00 GOES TO THE DESIGNER FOR EVERY T-SHIRT SOLD (any prize winner or special selection)
and then AGAIN ..after an amazing 1000 shirts sold:
€ 4.00 GOES TO THE DESIGNER FOR EVERY T-SHIRT SOLD (any prize winner or special selection)
We think this is pretty amazing … now you may ask yourself, what does that actually mean …how much can I get if you guys sell for example 2000 of my tshirts and I won a gold prize?
The answer is: €6,000.00 :)))
silver is a little less (€ 5,875), bronze (€ 5,850) and special selection the same (€ 5,850)
We are committed to our designers ..as long as we are selling, you are earning. We think this is the best deal out there.
So, what are you waiting for …Give Us Your Best!!
Please note we will be changing our Terms and Conditions for uploading designs to reflect this update.

The challenge of printing Little Old Men
By: Allmightys Team
We wanted to give you all are little more insight into the art of silkscreen printing and we thought that Little Old Men is a good example.
This design is particularly difficult to print as there are so many details that you really have to think how to get it onto a t-Shirt. Take a look at what's happening in the windows, the leaves on the trees and the background: the satellite dish on the rooftop , the helicopter on the building in the far back and the detail of the stonework in some buildings.
The problems start with the color: printing white on a dark background means that you have to print two layers otherwise the white won't show well enough. Although the guys at Printworks used a really thin mesh (which you need for this detailing) the color always runs a bit when you print the second layer, making the lines thicker than yo want them. So, after much debate, they came up with the good idea to print the foreground twice and the background only once. Simple really, but you got to think of it ;)
This way they were able to achieve a degree of spatial perspective as well as the buildings in the background tend to "fade out".
We are really happy with the outcome... thanks to the team at Printworks for making this happen :)
To see the final outcome or buy little old men, see them here

Guerrilla Gardeners : UK
By: Filip
Guerrilla Gardeners is a group of individuals with 171 people on their membership list who strike at night armed with shovels, shrubs and plants looking for areas of south london to brighten up.
Here is their latest effort:
I was invited to talk about guerilla gardening at the Port Eliot Lit Fest. A local tipped us off that the station had an orphaned platform, so Lyla 1046 and I dug out a fresh trench next to a smothered rose and in went two new mallow and some verbena. By mistake we also planted the MG in a boggy field.
Check them out here ..you can also make donations and take part yourself!

Allmightys Update : 3 New Tees in Store + Site Update
By: Allmightys Team
We now have 3 new fantastic tees in the store from our Monsters & Mayhem competition.
The tees are:
You are HIRED good sir! by YONIL
Heart Monsters by Giovanni Donadini
Dream Monsters by ci chenSaman Bemel Benrud
Grab them while they're FRESH!
Site Update
You may have also noticed but we have made the site a little simpler. The front page no longer takes you to the store but rather the summary page of what's going on at Allmightys. The shop is now growing fast and with 15+ tees in the store we needed to jiggle a few things. The front page now has direct access to all 3 areas of the site; 1. The Blog, 2. The Competitions and 3. the Shop. We think this works a lot better and it gives us a little more freedom to promote events/new tees on the front page. We have also made the side bar a little less crowded, we though there was way too much info there. Friends are now on the front page instead of sidebar. Also, new designers are right on the front page, nice and big ...this is the area for all designers so we will be adding older designers there too. You like?!

Big City Life Update
By: Allmightys Team
Only 4 days left to the scoring end. The funny thing is that 3,4,5 places are still fighting amongst themselves :) They are so close that every vote makes a difference. Also, it appears that these designs are also getting close to the 2 and 1st place, so no-one is safe anymore :) . We would LOVE to reveal more but we can't and its so hard to keep it away from you!! :( All will be revealed very soon!!!..only 4 DAYS!!
We also have some good news coming in the next few days ....but only once the voting is over. We think everyone is going to be pleased about this.
We have been busy today and yesterday working on the new front page. We have really had troubles finding a best way to present your designs and designers on the front page. Its really a design issue , how to make the front page look clean and at the same time display so much info. From the start, when we originally designed the website in October 2006, we always knew that it was your work that will make up the graphic look of the website and we wanted to build something that would just act as a frame to your wonderful designs. We also knew, including some comments we received recently, that having a store on the front page might not be a way forward. This has also resulted in slowing down the loading of the site. We now finally feel like we have a perfect solution and we think you will like it. Visit the site tomorrow/day after to see the new front.
We also have new Tees coming to the store tomorrow. These are 4 tees from the Monsters & Mayhem competition and they look fantastic! I (filip) have already grabbed one (bought it actually, oh yes, we have to pay too) and wore it yesterday. I just love when the looks are coming especially from people who identify themselves in the tee (can you guess which Tee I am talking about?)
Anyhow, lots to happen tonight/tomorrow/day after. Keep an eye on the site and off course, as always, all your comments are welcome.

Life is a Laugh
By: Kon
Here is a very cool installation at London's Gloucester Road Underground station:
Artist Brian Griffiths "who has filled the disused platform with Life Is A Laugh, an epic installation which is part assault course, part giant panda head. The artwork is the latest exhibition in the Gloucester Road Platform for Art programme, which presents four shows a year in the Underground space. Griffiths is known for his magical, absurdist work that in the past has included a super computer made from cardboard and other household materials and a galleon constructed in wooden furniture."
The installation is comissioned by Platform for Art, an art programme by London Underground. I think this is a very good idea: three million passengers use the network every day and apart from raising awareness towards the arts it gives people waiting for their train something to look at and think about...

Big City Life Update
By: Allmightys Team
Six days now left to Vote. New votes are coming in as we speak. Things are also getting really exciting as it seems that first and second place are holding strong their positions and there is a fight over the third place. Just as we think its set and the gap is widening its suddenly reduced to nothing and the 4th place design overtakes the 3rd. We think this is going to be the fight until the end. Its also very interesting what designs new visitors are voting for (see little text below). Lets also not forget about current 5,6 and 7th places as they are very close too. We'll have to wait until the end to see what happens.
The Designs
There seems to be general preference to idea strong designs which is fantastic. Richness of the design is not necessarily what people go for and from our experience voters evaluate designs on the following few principles: "Would I wear this" , "How well it is produced" and "How well is the idea demonstrated and applied to a T-Shirt". Even though we may appreciate a design from aesthetic point of view, we may not forget that this is also an apparel. If you ask yourself whether this design would also work on a Coffee Mug for example, and the answer is yes, then there might be something with the design not being thoroughly through out for the design on a T-Shirt. Taking T-Shirt as a medium as a starting point and then the theme as secondary usually results in successful designs. This is what makes designing t-shirts especially exciting. It is very different from working with other mediums - It is wearable, and it puts the "purpose of designs" in the forefront. People notice what you wear and they do wonder why you wear particular design. We all associate in some way to what we wear. This may be colour, shape, reference to an old item of clothing and many others. What we wear makes us what we are to other people. It is a reflection of our personality.
Taking all of this into account, is it really possible to evaluate a good T-Shirt Design? We don't think so, the only thing left to us to evaluate is how well is the design produced, how much effort has one put into it and how developed the idea is.
What do you think?
6 DAYS LEFT
ps. Has anyone noticed the theme running through our blog posts? :)

Dilston Grove
By: Kon
Dilston Grove, formerly the Clare College Mission Church in Southwark Park in London, is a listed building and one of the earliest examples of poured concrete construction. No longer consecrated ground, it is now the city's only permanent large-scale space available for artists.
The installation pictured here is Bridge, London artist Michael Cross' installation for the 2006 London Design Festival. "The installation allows any member of the flock to walk on water inside a former church. Cross achieved the effect by half-filling the century-old church with water and installing steps that seemed to magically appear as visitors walked across the water. Purely mechanical, the weight of a person activates each step, which rises just above the surface of the water as they walk forward. There are some 30 steps in all, ending in the middle of the church—isolation that may be peaceful for some and terrifying for others."
(via coolhunting)
A brilliant space and a fine example of re-using abandoned city space.

Ian Borden - Skateboarding, Space and the City
By: Filip
This book has been around for a while but never the less a very good reference when it comes to understanding how we experience the city. Ian Borden uses skateboarding as a point of view. Architect by profession he teaches at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London and has written a number of great books.
About:
This book is the first detailed study of the urban phenomenon of skateboarding. It looks at skateboarding history from the surf-beaches of California in the 1950s, through the purpose-built skateparks of the 1970s, to the street-skating of the present day and shows how skateboarders experience and understand the city through their sport. Dismissive of authority and convention, skateboarders suggest that the city is not just a place for working and shopping but a true pleasure-ground, a place where the human body, emotions and energy can be expressed to the full.

Big City Life - Update
By: Allmightys Team
First day of voting is almost over (first 24hrs), and as expected the designs have been moving up and down the ladder like mad. Its absolutely impossible to predict anything but some designs are taking the stronghold :). With another 9 days to go everything can change so we'll keep an eye and let you know how the designs are doing.
We've also had today one of those designers that think they can beat the system. Nothing new, we've seen it all before, and we sent our usual "happy" email that said something like "FINAL WARNING" :) I think they have learned their lesson. Off course, if our email "ended up in their Junk mail folder" or "they haven't checked their email" or "I couldn't connect to Internet last night so I didn't get your message and I am really sorry" then the design is OUT of the competition :). Its a shame that these things happen but its kind of understandable. We are not here to make it difficult..just fair.
The site has also been overwhelmed with traffic in the last 2 days so if you have been getting the message "The Page is Being Loaded..Please Wait" we know about it and are working on getting around that problem. One solution is moving to faster servers and we are working on that. As soon as the storm has passed, in a day or two, you should not be getting that message anymore (hopefully).
This is also the time when the site is growing in Member numbers. A lot of friends are visiting and we would like to thank the new visitors for their votes.
We hope you enjoy your stay at Allmightys.

Big City Life - VOTE NOW
By: Allmightys Team
The submission time for BIG CITY LIFE has just ended and the voting has started!!
Thank you all for submitting such wonderful designs! We are very excited to see how this round of scoring will turn out and who will come top.
Which designs make you laugh, which ones make you think? Which ones do you want to see on a T-shirt?
For all the newcomers to the site: you can score points for each design once.
0 points means: "Na, I really don't like that one" and 5 points means: "Yes, this is so cool that I want to see it in print".
Remember that you don't have to score all designs at once. You can score a few, have a coffee and return later to score the rest. Our server will remember you and tell you the ones you already scored by fading the image into black and white. Neat ;) but don't forget to score all the designs ..they all need your vote!
So go ahead, vote for your favourites and choose the ones you want us to print!!!
Scoring Ends on Monday, 27th July, 11 pm GMT.

iCat
By: Kon
here's something weird: the iCat is a robotic cat developed by Philips.
In their own words the iCat "interacts with the user in a natural way by understanding spoken requests, giving replies, recognizing faces or everyday objects and by using body language such as facial expressions, nodding and other head movements."
Apart from this electronic pet being no new feature (remembering the Sony Dog years ago), I am missing any real revelations here: it's more or less static, the features strongly remind me of the Wallace & Grommit characters, and the speech sounds like very early computer speak. Ok, it can play tic-tac-toe with you and there appear to be multiple personality options (one smoother, nicer one and one that is more outspoken and direct) but apart from that I see no real pioneering in the field of robotics...
I think it will still be a long time until we can say to our electronic pets: "stay...good boy".

Big City Life - Update
By: Allmightys Team
Just little over a day left now to submit entries. We are a little surprised with the number of rejections. I would say that we rejected about 40 designs this time around which is quite a high number considering in the last competition we had about 86 in total that were voted for. I believe we only rejected about 15-20 designs in the last Monsters & Mayhem competition. I can't stress enough how important it is to put some time into these designs. We are getting a lot of submissions with people thinking that spending 5 min doing a design would be sufficient ...it really isn't especially when compared to those designs that do show a lot of effort. We even got few designs where people put in the descriptions “5 min submission” which only makes us even more reluctant to accept...and the worst thing is that they look like 2 min submission :). Anyhow, the submissions that have been accepted are really cool and we can't wait to share them with you.
At the time of this post, there is only 1 day and 4 hours remaining to submit. Thanks to our Mac OSX widget, we can see exactly how much time is left, without having to be calculating it all the time with all this GMT business :) The cool thing about the widget is that the new timer will appear on Tuesday which will be for voting. It will say how much time is left to vote. Very neat!
For those not familiar with the voting process, you don't have to score all the designs at once because the system remembers which ones you have scored and how many you have remaining. We also think this is one thing we should probably put up a page for, how to vote, with examples of what the page looks like. Our old users know this already but the new ones don't. This is also reflected in some submissions with people uploading Voting Gallery Images or thumbnails orientated the wrong way. Anyhow, make sure you score all the designs..but more about this on Tuesday when the voting goes live.
Its also very interesting that a lot of submissions are a little negative about cities ...and this is very worrying. Does this mean that our generations are no longer welcome in the cities? Do cities really alienate people? Are we really overworking ourselves and not getting much in return? Do we feel alone? Do smaller town provide more value for money? A number of designs raise these questions, and it would be interesting to see what your thoughts are.
We will raise some of these issues over the course of voting and it would be great to get some discussions going. We want to see what our members think.

Big City Life - Update
By: Allmightys Team
Only few days left now to scoring! Its getting really exciting and the submissions are coming in dozens now. Its also great to see that people are submitting more than one submission and they are all as good. I think we are going to have a very close fight this time around ... and its going to be really interesting to see where your votes go.
The submissions have generally been very varied and even though there is one theme, the designs are so very different.
We are also looking at bringing new feature for the next competition. Developing these things takes time and we just didn't have time to include them in this competition. They are mainly about getting you guys in more of a driving seat when it comes to new submissions. The features are really cool and we think you will like them. If you have any suggestions, NOW is the time to make them! We are always looking for new ideas how to improve the site and the way competitions work.

Big City Life - Update
By: Allmightys Team
Welcome to the daily updates on Allmightys current "Big City Life" T-Shirt design competition.
Our older members are already familiar with these updates as we had a section under My Allmightys which was called Member News and did exactly this. From now, all the competition updates will be posted in the main blog where you will be able to comment, ask questions and everything else. If you still want to access the old Member News you can do that from here but the menu is now removed.
We've had designs coming in from the first day the competition was announced, which is fantastic. The response was also very good but we are getting worried that a lot of people are leaving submissions to the last minute ...please DONT!. Please submit as early as possible because in the last few competitions we had people submitting at 22.50 at night when the deadline was 23.00. By leaving things to the last minute you risk your design not being accepted ..so please don't!..we want you beautiful designs!! :)
Unfortunately, as always, we had to refuse some submissions :( but we think this is for the best. Its always better to offer designers that last opportunity to improve their designs rather than face disappointment when the results come out. If your design has been refused, just do a little more work on it and we think it should be fine. Ask you friends what they think or even you can ask us ... just drop us an email at submissions_at_allmightys.com and we will respond as soon as possible with what we think.
ok, we think this is it for the first of many posts about our current competition to come.
Keep an eye on the blog and fee free to ask any questions about the competition and off course keep those designs coming!!

Zumthor builds the "Bruder Klaus" field chapel
By: Kon
"Sited on farmland outside the German village of Wachendorf, the chapel is dedicated to a 15th century farmer and mystic who is being considered as a candidate for canonisation.
The 12m-high structure was built by local farmers using a technique the architect terms “rammed concrete”. A wigwam-like structure of tree trunks was erected, with the walls formed around it. Every day for 24 days the farmers poured 50cm of concrete. The logs were then burnt out, leaving a charred and richly textured internal finish.
An oculus lets in light and rain at the point where the tree trunks converged and further light is admitted through the unfilled holes left by the shuttering ties. While the interior remains extraordinarily dark, the available light reflects off a floor of poured lead.
Zumthor supervised work on the project while construction progressed on his design for a gallery in nearby Cologne, which is due to open in September."
Funny things is that the chapel stands in a village next to where I'm originally from, the countryside around Cologne. I will definately check it out next time I'm home...
A friend actually sent me the info :) Thanks, Strackwitz!

Friday Fun: iPhone, what's that?!
By: Filip
You are probably living on Mars if you haven't heard of iPhone but we are glad you are reading Allmightys :)
It's been very hard to deter ourselves from posting anything on iPhone because:
1. There has been way too much info on the net, news, papers, everywhere about the iPhone
2. Everyone is f* talking about it!!
3. We don't have one ..as we are Europeans and god knows when it's going to be released here and its gonna cost €A,LOT.00
4. We want it! so better not talk about it and pretend as if we don't care!
But we finally give in ..
So here are three best iPhone links yet:
1. iPhone singalong
2. Europeans and everyone else who hasn't got one, you can get one here - absolutely free
3. .... or iNOPhone
Now back to looking at iPhonegraphy ....”hmm...there must be more reviews out there i haven't read , let me look”. “ ahhhhhhh.....”
Have a great weekend all!!
