Allmightys.com Update
By: Allmightys Team
Hello all! As you might have already noticed we have made some changes to the way site is organised. We think this works a lot better and, of course, your gorgeous designs are now on the front page. We didn't feel the designs are getting enough exposure being an extra click away so now they are right in the front...and can we be any more proud with such great designs that we have in store.
We are also moving "Member News" into the main blog so keep an eye on this as we get closer to the submission deadline.
We hope you like the "new" look. If you have any comments, please let us know.

An antique music video
By: Kon
From Stewart Smith comes this video for Grandaddy's song "Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground)".
"Programmed entirely in Applesoft II on a vintage 1979 Apple with 48K of RAM, the music video is a beautifully mesmerizing experiment that reveals the capabilities of this vintage technology. Using a computer so old it only types in all caps and lacks a hard drive, a mouse and even up and down arrow keys, Stewart Smith was able to create an elegant type-based video utilizing code and techniques that today seem ancient."
Being an avid Grandaddy fan myself, I was thrilled to see this video that uses this antique technology in such a simple and beautiful way, capturing and transporting the mood and the essence of the song...
Well done, Stewart!

Space Diving
By: Kon
"Does the idea of leaping out of a spaceship with just a specially-adapted spacesuit and parachute thrill you? Thanks to a group of space scientists, the day you find yourself awaiting the order to jump 120,000 feet above earth could be closer than you think. And it's not just an idea for extreme sports fans, as the two men behind the idea reckon that Space Diving could be used as a safety function for astronauts whose ship has malfunctioned.
Orbital Outfitters, run by Rick Tumlinson and Jonathan Clark, has already started to develop the equipment it thinks is needed to achieve the feat. The 120,000-foot jump is seen as mere baby (space) steps, as Rick and Jonathan are aiming to make the 150-mile survival jump reality. This would involve falling at speeds of over 2,500 mph before a special drogue chute opens to stabilize their descent on entry to the Earth's outer atmosphere.
By the time the jumper reaches our planet's denser atmosphere, he or she will be travelling at more manageable 120mph. Then the conventional chute opens, allowing the brave individual a more-or-less normal landing back on land, and it's back to the bar for a celebratory beer with your friends - that is, if you landed close by where you told them you'd meet up..."
...well, sounds like that gives you a lot of time to think your life over...

Robottomis Drawing
By: Kon
I love these speed-up videos of people drawing things: to watch shapes and blurs take the form of a detailed drawing is amazing. I always wonder though that every move looks so precise and no-one seems to make a mistake...

High Speed Cameras - Lighter Ignition and Milk Droplets
By: Filip
There is something really wonderful about images captured by high speed cameras. Capturing a fraction of a moment gives the event a life of its own. Its as though these events co-exist within events we can see with naked eye. We are not talking of any kind of microscopic imagery where any sense of reality is lost. The reason why these are so wonderful is because we understand the event but do not comprehend the complexity of physics that go on. The less we understand the more interesting it becomes?

Make a Messenger Bag out of Trash Bags
By: Filip
MAKE have posted a really cool guide on how to make a messenger bag out of bin bags. I love the idea of making my own bag although using bin bags is not really eco-friendly considering you have so many other shopping bags sitting in your kitchen (as they point out in the guide). The truth is though that the black bag they made does look a lot cooler than having one with TESCO or SAINSBURY written all over it.
Check out the video guide here. very cool.
Also, you can subscribe to their video podcast via itunes here.

Top 10 LEGO Mindstorms Creations
By: Filip
I absolutley love Mindstorm. Its one of those things on my neverending shopping list. We have one at University and its fantastic. Last (academic) year a studio in the degree (Francoise Girardin) were using it on their architectural models. They were working with Interactive Installations and part of the brief was to integrate mindstorm into their models. The results were fantastic.
Its just wonderful thinking of all the potential moving away from traditional architectural model making.
Off course, these can be used real scale too.

New T-Shirt in Store - Little Old Men by Little Old Men
By: Allmightys Team
To celebrate 6 months of Allmightys Launch we have asked Andy Martin to ask his little old men if they would like to visit Allmightys tee. After very long quarrels and screaming they finally agreed. Then they packed all their bags, organised their workforce and after months of hard work they are finally here. Tell them what you think!
Little about them:
The little old men come in many different shapes and sizes, they are mischievous, adventurous, grumpy, excitable and kinda smelly. No two are the same but most hold the same values, mostly to squeeze the last bit of fun out of life. Read more here.

Allmightys Updates : Small blog improvements
By: Filip
Just a quick note on the recent updates...
We have just locked blog comments to registered members only. Reason for this is mainly to avoid spam ..as recently we have been bombarded with all kinds of sex sites..lets put it this way: interesting things are out there..but not for this site :P
So we though its better for you to login to post rather than go through all those "crazy letters" other sites do. The good news is that now you can stay logged in; once you log in, you don't need to log in again to post.
Another little improvement is that you can now use Gravatar for the blog comments. A gravatar, or globally recognised avatar, is quite simply an 80×80 pixel avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Gravatar has become a standard on many blogs and once you set it up and attach a picture to the email address it will follow you on which ever blog you go to. One avatar everywhere.. very cool. See new comment below.
Go here to register your email and assign picture (avatar) to it.
All of these little improvements are a part of merging user databases with the blog. Sorry about avatars you uploaded when registered but these will be implemented in the future anyway ..so keep them there.
We also have few other improvements or should we say "features" coming to the site. These have to do with scoring of designs and submissions uploading and aprovals. More about this when we get closer to implementing ..at the moment all in development stage.
We always look at news ways of improving the site. If you have any suggestions or you would like to see some features on Allmightys please comment or send us email here.
Yours,
Allmightys Team

Warp your room
By: Kon
These people had a great idea how to make wallpaper more interesting. The examples of the stuff they sell at "warp your room" are very cool... the wallpaper warps around objects on or in your wall, like sockets, doors and windows...even paintings, although the problem here is that you can never rehang your pictures without having to redecorate your whole room ;)
It looks like you have to be very good to get the wallpaper rolls (46,5 cm width) on the walls exactly right, but once it's done, your wall will definately look very cool!!

Good-Time Mix Machine
By: Filip
Check this out...its actually a full size park ride. Each of the blue/red boxes in the image can take on two people .. produces some masive paintings..See images..
"Good-Time Mix Machine: Scrambler Drawings" I connected a gas generator and air compressor to buckets of paint and secured them into the seats of a Scrambler amusement park ride. Once the ride was in motion, paint sprayed out of the benches onto vinyl tarps placed underneath. The result is a series of enormous hypocycloid designs which recorded the hidden patterns created by the ride as it turned. Two videos were created in conjuction with the drawings. This work was funded by Grand Arts, Kansas City, MO, with assistance from Tony Wight/ Bodybuilder and Sportsman Gallery, Chicago, IL; ADA Gallery, Richmond, VA; and Todd Simon. Brochure available as download.

The Earth Guide
By: Kon
Here is a truly beautiful site about our earth.
It calls itself the "Earth Guide" and is made by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. The site is arranged around a "question map" which covers different topics and areas. You can find out a lot about the blue planet starting with its location in the milky way going to the depth of the oceans and the relative areas of land.
The site is beautifully animated, although the flash navigation can be a bit confusing at first...
It comes with a range of funny noises to enhance the tranquil feel of the site.
Something for a little evening browsing or a break over lunch :)
Enjoy here...

1EUR from each "Big City Life" T-Shirt sold goes to Oxfam International Charity.
Here are some important dates:
Submission Deadline: 16 July 2007 23.00GMT
Scoring Starts: 17 July 2007

FESPA in Berlin
By: Kon
The FESPA (fair for digital and screenprinting) was here in Berlin last week and I went to see it to find out what's going on in this business.
It was really amazing: fully automated screen printing machines that print 18 colours and 20 Shirts at a time, scented prints, embroideries...you name it, they had it!
I still think the hand-printed shirts have the better quality going for them, so we're going to stick with that ;)
I also cought up with the guys from American Apparel, who also had a stand there...
It was fun checking out the new garments they had available to get an idea what we could be doing in the future :)

Don't Panic Poster Competition
By: Filip
Don’t Panic would like to invite all artists and designers out there to enter our coming poster competition. The best designs will exhibited at a Don’t Panic exhibition and the king of them all will become the official Don’t Panic poster.
The theme for the competition will be ‘Media’ and we are looking for entries inspired by and based around that issue. Your interpretation of the theme can be rendered using graphic design, illustration, photography, type or any medium you can think of which we can print.
All posters will be voted on through the website as democratically as possible. When voting finishes the 20 top runners will be judged by Jonathan Barnbrook - one of the UK’s most innovative graphic designers (www.barnbrook.net).
All 20 top runners will have their posters exhibited at a special Don’t Panic exhibition. The winner, as chosen by Barnbrook, will have 80 thousand of their posters printed and distributed. Don’t Panic will supply the winner with 20 flat copies without advertising on the reverse. We will also sell 20 signed and 200 unsigned copies via our website and split the revenue with the winner.
Winning posters will be printed A2 size (594x420mm) at 300 Dpi. For the purposes of voting and previewing on our website, poster entries uploaded should be:
File Format: JPG or PNG
Resolution: 72 DPI
Max Filesize: 2MB
Visit the website at www.dontpaniconline.com for more information and make sure you upload your poster as soon as possible, because the longer it is online the more votes it can receive.

Cool USB Flash Memory
By: Filip
I have been searching for an interesting USB memory stick for a very long time and I still haven't got one. I rely on my Treo 680 phone with SD card or my MacBookPro that i carry with me all the time. These USB stick are such a great opportunity to explore conceptually. Unfortunately, a very large majority of USB sticks out there are just so disappointing.
Here is a few USB Memory sticks that I found. I think these look very cool.
Lego blocks USB Flash Drives (via engadget)
I absolutely love these. I think they are wonderfully simple and they come in lego colours ..fantastic! you can get them here.
Beabrick USB Memory Sticks (via FarEastGizmos)
I am a big fan of designer toys. Bearbricks are truly fantastic designer toys. If you haven't heard of them, check them out here. Unfortunately, these USB sticks are not available yet, but see FarEastGizmos for more info.
FlashBag USB Memory Drives
Now, these look fantastic. not available yet, but definitely to keep an eye on. Finally someone is exploring this opportunity to do something exciting with USB drives.
These actually blow up when you are running out of free space - cool!
Read more here.
How Cool Are These? (via eglobe1)
...but do they exist?
and finally, these, designed by Vicky Wei (via yankodesign)
Memory Infinite has a USB male connector at one end and a female connector at the other, providing an “add up” concept for USB finger discs. By connecting one Memory Infinite with another to add up the storage capacity, the user won't waste the old storage capacity when getting a larger one. The user can choose to combine or separate Memory Infinite, making the usage of USB finger discs more convenient.
Anyone know any other funky USB memory sticks?

Why Do Design Competitions?
By: Filip
Hello All,
As you would expect, we at allmightys visit a lot of graphic and illustration sites to promote allmightys competition, designers and T-shirts. It is interesting that we keep coming across comments such as:
“Competitions suck, pay us instead” so we thought it would be interesting to address this topic. We may be “preaching to the converted” but never the less we think its an important issue that we all can comment on. Maybe we are shooting ourselves in the foot as we are after all a competition site but we think its important, and very interesting.
As some of you may know, both Kon and Filip are architects. No one knows more about doing free work than architects do. We enter architectural competitions all the time and actually I (Filip) am working currently on a EROPAN 9 housing competition for a site in the UK. We have about 3 weeks left and the amount of work that is going into this is incredible, as do all competitions. We actually have a student working on it full time. The question is, why do we do competitions?
Competitions go beyond the purpose of just obtaining commissions. We enter competitions with 100+ entries knowingly that we may not have a big chance because larger, more known offices, and with way better resources are also submitting entries-they practically have a team of people working on a competition full time. So why do we do it when we know chances of winning are very low. This has been a question I have been wondering for years. The reason is that competitions are a way of further development, team work, creative process and ambition. When we do competitions, the whole office comes alive. It is as if we put our lives on hold and dedicate everything we have to doing what we love most and that is designing buildings. New concepts are always tested, new ideas explored, new questions asked, working methods developed and new skills gained. We see competitions as a way of continuos professional development that we can apply to real projects. We believe that this is a very important elements of any business, whether this be Graphic Design, Illustration or Architecture. We as designers never stop learning. It is our duty to constantly explore and innovate. Without this, the work will not stand the test of time. This is also the reason why we at WAG (Working Architecture Group) are all involved in education. All of us, the 3 directors teach at London universities. Competitions, teaching and research enables us to articulate, explore and develop the core aims and values of their clients in interesting and powerful new ways.
So, are competitions important? Off course they are. It is not just about promoting your work, it also about you own design development. Its about your ideas, fun and exploration. We at allmightys support competitions because we know how important they are. Competitions are not doing work for free. Love for design goes beyond financial gain. Its about creativity, sharing of ideas and working for a better tomorrow. Is there any other way to do this better than via competitions and education? I don't think so.
Yours, Filip

"Da Zi Ran" at the printers
By: Allmightys team
I went down to see how "Da Zi Ran" by Chua Kim Meng was printed yesterday. It's looking really cool and will be in the store on the weekend. Louis is the guy printing it...he's a real pro and has been screen printing in Berlin and Uruguay for years. He's got quite a reputation over here :)
We are working with him as well as our other printers from now on. All the "Mother Nature" designs were split between these two as 10 prints do take up a lot of time to do...
But I think they were worth the wait: on the weekend we will have all 10 Designs up and running in the store!
Remember: if you have bought a shirt already, you can be our "supermodel" for the store. We're looking forward to see you wearing Allmightys :)

Don’t Panic!
By: Filip
‘Don’t Panic!’ is a new exhibition at The Architecture Foundation’s Yard Gallery that presents alternate visions for now and the near future that concentrate on the fragility of human behaviour.
‘Don’t Panic!’ features films, architectural projects, design products and installations by recent graduates and tutors from the Royal College of Art. These address the realities of contemporary life that architects and designers usually ignore: fear, danger and the fragility of human behaviour. It embraces and celebrates a world full of contradiction and complication, a society obsessed with youth, beauty, media and celebrity, a society where what we believe to be true has more value than empirical truth, a society obsessed with itself and its own desires, a society searching for instant gratification, a society in which fewer than 50% of us describe ourselves as happy.

Designer's Lamps
By: Kon
Mark McKenna sells "Designer Emulation Kits" on his site, a do-it-yourself building kit of famous lamp designs. All the lamps run of a standard 9 volt battery and look really cool as small versions of their famous bigger brothers...
"The Designer Emulation Kits (DEK’s for short) are meant as the sincerest homage to some of the greatest modern designers of our time. The lamps and designers being “emulated” have a particular importance. They are represented in countless design tomes extolling the various movements, and they are held up as prime examples of “good design.” "

Also, another workaround to this is to actually add allmightys.com to your address book or a rule in you email application. This way you will avoid our newsletters ever getting into your junk mail. Email sender we use for newsletters is do-not-reply@allmightys.com so you can also add this little guy to your address book :)
If you have any questions about our newsletters or if you would unsubscribe, please visit this page.
In case you just would like to subscribe to our newsletter and not become a member (not sure why you would do that ..:)..) you can do so here.
Yours,
Allmightys Team
