Friday Animation on Saturday

By: Kon

Our Friday Animation is coming to you on a Saturday this week ;)

This movie is the result of 5-6 months work for a final year animation project at the University of Hertfordshire in 2005/6 by Aidan Gibbons & Simon Reeves. Since then it has won the Best VFX Film in the Global Student Animation Awards 2006 and was nominated for several other prizes.

oSkope

By: Kon

Here is "a visual search assistant that allows for intuitive exploration of popular online databases, including Amazon, Ebay, Flickr or YouTube. All search results are ordered as a “grid“, “stack“, “pile“ or “list“ through which users can browse & store favourites in a personal folder. in addition, a simple scatterplot representation depicts the results in terms of popularity & price (Amazon), price versus duration (Ebay) & ranking versus date (YouTube)."

looks useful for browsing as well as a detailed search, as you can obtain useful information about the articles straight through oSkope.

Sculpture projects '07

By: Kon

At the end of the month, the 10-yearly “sculpture projects“ in Münster close. I went there recently to have a look at what's on display. It's an interesting event because the whole city becomes the stage for established and not so established artists who install their sculptural pieces all over town. The whole thing is called projects because the result is somewhat an experiment in order to find out which pieces actually acquire the necessary sculptural quality- at least that's my impression. The successful ones are sometimes bought by the city and remain there for the public. Past artists include Claes Oldenburg, Keith Haring, Bruce Naumann and Richard Serra, so some of the “big” names have left their mark here.
The 30th September marks the end of this event with a big closing party, so if you're there, go and check it out.

Photoshop - History

By: Filip

Ever wanted to know how Photoshop came about? After all, it is a program we use pretty much daily. The oldest version I remember using was Ver 2. It's moved on quite a bit since then :)

Check it out...

Extract:
In the summer of 1988, John thought they might have the basis of a commercially viable product. Thomas was reluctant: “Do you have any idea how much work it is to write a commercial application?” he asked John. But with his naive optimism, John convinced Thomas it would be worth the effort. “I’ll figure out how to make money with this,” he told his brother. Well, John was right, but so was Thomas. It did take a lot of work.

Once Upon A Time : Score Designs!

By: Allmightys Team

The submission time for ONCE UPON A TIME.. has ended and the voting has just started!!

Thank you all for submitting such wonderful designs!  We've recieved a fantastic response and it's exciting to see so many cool ideas looking at this competition theme from very varied angles. All we need to know now is what you, your family, your friends, your work colleagues think about them by scoring/voting.

SCORE DESIGNS NOW!

A quick word of explanation for all the newcomers to the site: you can score points for each design once. 0 points means: "Na, I really don't like that one" and 5 points means: "Yes, this is so cool that I want to see it in print". Remember that you don't have to score all designs at once. You can score a few, have a coffee and return later to score the rest. Our server will remember you and tell you the ones you already scored by fading the image into black and white. Neat ;) but don't forget to score all the designs ..they all need your vote!

If you are new to voting on Allmightys then why not check out our Voting Guide.

So go ahead, score the designs and tells us which ones you want us to print!!! Scoring Ends on Monday, 8th October, 11 pm GMT.

Allmightys Update

By: Allmightys Team

With only 3 days left to the submission deadline for our current "Once Upon A Time.." competition, things are really hotting up. The submissions keep coming in, as you can see in the forum, and we've had some really fantastic ones. All we need to know now is what you, your family, your friends, your work colleagues think about them by scoring/voting.

The Voting starts on Wednesday, 19th September, sometime AM. You will see the existing menu "Submit Design" menu change into "Vote Designs". Here you will be able to see all the designs that have been accepted, vote and comment on them. If you would like to share your score with everyone else, please let us know by commenting. The designers would love to know why and how you score their designs and your comments will be one of the deciding factors whether that design gets printed or not.

Considering there is only 3 days left now, you still have a chance to make some alterations to your design taking into account comments made and resubmit. We will be accepting and "retiring" designs up to the last minute on Tuesday 18th Sept. 23.00 GMT (Submission Deadline). Please, if you still haven't submitted a design but you want to, do this ASAP. Do not leave it for last moment because your submissions may be rejected and you will not have enough time to make a small alteration that will make all the difference. If you plan to submit the last moment anyway, and we can't convince you otherwise, make sure you READ THE RULES. You do not want your fantastic design rejected just because your gallery image file is one pixel too big.
Keep those great submissions coming ...only 3 days left!

When the voting launches, you can score the designs on the scale of 0-5, zero being those that you don't like (but do you think any design deserves a zero??!) or 5 that you love and want to see as a prize winner/printed. We would like you to score ALL the designs, but don't worry, you don't have to score them all at once. The system remembers your score and you can always come back another day to score the rest. Be careful as you can not change your score. Once you hit that number, its cast in stone. :)
Why not check out our Voting Guide here if you never voted before.

The voting ends on 8th October 2007, 23.00 GMT. There is plenty of time for your family, friends and colleagues to score all the designs and tell us what they think.
We will announce the winners the next day and then jump right back to the NEW competition and submissions.
We are at the moment of thinking of possible themes for the next one. If you have any ideas, let us know!

That's it!. Touch up those great submissions...and let the voting soon begin!

CHINA 2007

By: Kon

Like I wrote last week, here are the pictures from the opening of the CHINA 2007 exhibition at the Raab Gallery last night. A good turnout, many of the Chinese artists were there, and the crowd was very interested. The feeling I got was that the art scene is developing in many different directions. There is no general "school" and I don't think that such a straightforward direction in development will establish itself soon. Much rather that several styles will become dominant and a few individuals will make their ways in whichever direction they take. The traditional painting is still strong, but elements of modern, abstract elements are visible already...

Once upon an advert

In theme with our current competition, have a look what today's products would look like if they were advertised a while ago...

I really like the old-fashioned graphics, and somehow they still work with the much more modern products.

Music: Belleruche Live @ Cargo

By: Filip

We don't tend to review music here, but it's something we all love so let this be the first music review. Another reason for adding music reviews to Allmightys is because we love to share everything we love with you and when we go to a music gig that just blows us away we can't just keep quiet. We hope you enjoy this review and if you guys have been to a fantastic gig recently, seen a very good movie then why not drop us a message with your review and we may add it to our blog ...off course crediting you, your site, etc..

So, lets get to it.. Belleruche..

I came across Bellaruche on myspace, by usually browsing different profiles somehow i ended up on their space. In the background Northern Girls was playing, deep, funky hip hop beats with the voice to die for.

On Friday night we Kat (my wife) and I went to see them play live at the London's hip Cargo. Crowd was mixed between the after work youngish clubbers to a number of regulars. Definitely not what I remember cargo being 5 years ago, crowded, smoky..now it looked very different, smoke free (London smoking ban came into force 2 months back) and plenty of space to move about. The sense I got was that not many people knew who Bellaruche were or if there was a gig there at all. Whilst sitting in the garden, about 10.30pm we got a feel Belleruche were about to start. Went to the stage room, pretty empty, with maybe about 20 people standing around waiting for those Bellaruche funky  beats. Kathrin with Ricky and DJ Modest come onto the stage. Kathrin who i see for the first time, very charming and that voice, OMG, that voice. She thanks the crowd for coming with a very warm welcome. Her voice just has that warm, sweet feel to it that gives you goose bumps. Then, Bought and Sold (if i remember well) starts playing, her voice, hits the rooms and both Kat and I were just blown away.
A little Macy Gray like voice, with very funky hip-hop beats with wonderful scratching and backing guitar filled the room like everything we knew until now has just become history. There not many bands out there that combine such different styles of music together into such beautiful harmony. As Kathrin  says, they all 3 come from different backgrounds and they love playing what they love listening to. Absolutely melted. Few tracks in with few new ones we arrive to "Minor Swing"; an incredible track that is an absolute classic. Crowd is moving and the room filling, inviting people that were just there for few drinks suddenly are moving and dancing to the wonderful beats. A guest NYC based rapper girl (sorry, didn't catch the name) joins Kathrin on the stage for some improvised mix...and it sounds great...again, it just works. Second improvised track "red shoes" not as good as the first but never the less few that followed left us convinced that there is a lot to look forward to in their new album. Belleruche are heading for the top. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Now, head over to their MySpace now and then straight to purchase their fantastic new album

About the band (MySpace):

Kathrin deBoer.
Raised on a pirate boat sailing the South Pacific Ocean, with only Billie Holiday and Spanky Wilson records for company, Kathrins voice carries the soul of the wind off the cape mixed with the grit of illegal Polynesian rum bars. Lyrics written in bottles cast into the sea found their way into three continents; Kathrin jumped ship and found London.

Ricky Fabulous.
Leo. Baby. Following an adolescence chasing girls and heavy rock bands, Fabulous found himself trapped working for a Maltese gangster in a frozen northern town. Whilst keeping warm locked in a damp basement, he found a stack of quarter inch tapes and discovered the work of Grant Green and Django Reinhardt, which gave him the energy to slip out of town, heading south on a freight car clutching a false identity and a forty-year-old guitar.

DJ Modest.
Growing up in the deep south, in engine oil and mud, Modest discovered hiphop on a stolen radio, sneaking into clubs through broken windows to hear more. Building turntables and mixers from scavenged electronic gear and two stroke engines, he created a soundsystem and played unlawful hiphop parties in strange woodlands to farmers. He coaxes twisted Bluenote solos and broken drums from Shure m44-7s whilst drunk on moonshine.

The three met in a London street market whilst running from the law, banks and parents. Whilst holed up in Modests flat, he and Fabulous noticed Kathrin singing whilst making tea. They formed a plan and the band was born out of a shared love of old vinyl, true funk and real soul music.

Art in Berlin

By: Kon

China is everywhere at the moment. The Asian giant is slowly waking up and showing the rest of the world what it can do. Will this be the case for the art scene too? Next Tuesday, 11th September, The Raab Gallery in Berlin will open a unique show with a number of chinese artists. Their work differs greatly, ranging from figurative, post socialist painting to modern representation of an art scene that is establishing itself.
I will blog about this show next week and tell you more. Anyone who is in town, come by and look for yourself...

Obsolete Technology

Welcome to the Obsolete Technology Website.

This is a fun page to browse through. Next to a detailed page for most expired models, you can find old ads, compare the specs of old computers and find lots of links to similar sites. You can follow early models through the timeline of computer development and trace the way of computers back to the dawn of time (well, back to 1970 in this case ;))

Not sure how new, but this Converse site got me really excited. Among the great choice of different models, for $60 you can actually also build your own "converse one". The only thing missing is that you can't upload you own images but other than that a fantastic way to come up with very individual designs.
