Joint Custody Project

By: Kon

Joint Custody Project is a collaboration art project where 22 artists start a piece of art, then anonymously change it with someone else, while receiving one themselves. They continue on the one they received for a few days, and swap again. At the end, all pieces are exhibited at a show where the artists themselves see the pieces for the first time as a finished item. I think the idea is cool, and after Los Angeles, the project has been running in Berlin too. If you are in Berlin tomorrow night, check out the opening at the Raab Galerie at Fasanenstrasse 27 from 7 p.m.

Designers: Gary George Clotario

By: Filip

We asked Gary, our Special Selection prize winner with his "Nature and Technology" tee design, about his work and where he gets his inspiration. Gary has submitted the largest number of designs to Allmightys. A  great variety and his style is always evident...lots of detail, colour and richness.

Enjoy..

What inspires you Gary?
I get inspired, when I watch movies and animations with great video effects and have social relevance. People around me also inspire me a lot.

Who are you favorite artists and why?
I have lots of favorite artists, some of the notable names are Escher- I like his impossible figures, and optical illusions, Rembrandt- his style in playing with light and shadow is great, and Alex Ross who changed the comic industry with his stunning realistic drawings.

How do you produce your artworks and what mediums do you use?
My artworks start from concept sketches in my head, then draw what I imagine using pen and ink. While drawing, I just let my imagination draw continuously, I use pen because when I make mistake, I don’t erase it, instead I make it into another design. I also use Adobe  Illustrator in making vector designs, and Adobe Photoshop in making graphic designs. Flash is what I use in making animations and also in making vector drawings.

What are the websites you visit regularly and where do you get your inspiration?
I regularly visit gaming websites like gamespot (www.gamespot.com/) where I get updates on latest games. I also visit The FWA: Favourite Website Awards (thefwa.com/) where there are lots of good web designs. I get my inspirations from everything around me, including people, events, nature and other stuff.

What do you do when you are not designing?
When I’m not designing, I play PC games and Nintendo DS. I also get inspirations and ideas from the games I play.

Do you think Allmightys has helped you become a better designer and how?
Yeah! Allmightys make my brains wheedle out artistic designs that make me a better designer. :) I also learn from the tips on forum discussions like color halftone filter that makes doing graphic design easy.

Anything else you would like to add?
Today, with lots of graphic softwares available, making graphic design is easier.

End.

Hairwash

By: Kon

The name says it all: Hairwash-Project is a project by the Russian KunstGroup. They took pictures of people before and after having their hair washed... The links are kyrillic to me ;) but the collective image forms a very human pattern, especially if seen in it's entirety.

There is now a little over 5 days left to submit designs for our current "Pattern Battle" competition. The response has been best yet and with over 110 submissions there is a lot to score. We've really had a great variety of ideas and it's great to see all the different approaches to the theme.
We think this may be the hardest competition to select the winners just because the sheer variety of them. This is why we need you! 5 days and counting! Get those submissions in!

We are also currently in the process of preparing our next competition. We are going through the list of themes we have noted and some of you suggested and hope to finalise it any day now. We also need to pick a charity that needs our help. If you have ideas, then please let us know. We are always looking for charities that can benefit from our regular donations.

With every new competition, comes a new Mini Contest. This is when we give away few t-shirts to our regular blog readers. All we ask in return is a comment in the blog. RoyalGlamsters: Paranoid Park: Poster

By: Filip

If you like our recent gold prize winner "Paranoid Park" by RoyalGlamsters then you should definetly check out the poster available at yayart.net.

Titled "Hooly World" of the poster is inspired by the word of “Hooly”, word that
Because “Hooly World”, It’s the universe of sweet creatures (the Hooly or Hoolies) taken in the whirl of Life, but always happy. However, I like the idea that viewers could see many others things like teddy bears swimming in noodles...

If you haven't grabbed the Tee yet, then head now to the store and pick up a gorgeous brown version for boys or white for girls. They are a wonder to look at.

Designers: SiClark

By: Filip

Continuing our mini interviews, this week we bring you Simon Clark aka SiClark.
Simon is an amaizing UK based illustrator/animator with some trully wonderful and unique style to his work. Make sure you also check out his website for more examples and wonderful animations.
SiClark won Special Selection in our "Mother Nature" competition back in April 2007 with his unique "Bad Planet" submission.

What inspires you Simon?

This is always a hard question to answer, mainly because I find it hard to articulate how I get inspiration. For lack of a better term it just comes to me. It can come from watching a film, hearing a certain piece of music or seeing a colour combination on a random building, any small thing like that will start the cogs in my mind and out comes an idea. I'm obsessed with trees, buildings and texture. This is because I grew up in the country and now live in London and find it impossible to do simple things as I always get fixated with detail.

Who are you favourite artists and why?

In terms of fine art I would have to say the Chapman Brothers as a lot of their work seems quite obsessive which I can relate to and most importantly, it makes me laugh whenever I go to one of their exhibitions. With regards to illustration I have a lot of artists that I admire but my mind is more visually orientated so I'm useless at remembering names. Tom Gauld and Sam Webber stick in my mind though.

How do you produce your artworks and what mediums do you use?

Pretty much everything in my work is created by hand and made seperately. All these elements are then whacked into Photoshop and arranged and ocassionally coloured. I always use pen and ink and then use any kind of material to get the effect or texture that I am after.

What are the websites you visit regularly and where do you get your inspiration?

I don't really use the web for inspiration I'm afraid.

What do you do when you are not designing?

I'm obsessed with my work so when I'm not creating anything I'm usually thinking about what I'm going to do next. I spend most of my free time going to gigs.

Do you think Allmightys has helped you become a better designer and how?

I've only done one t-shirt design for Allmightys so I can't really make that claim, if I did more then I'm sure it would help.

End.

Viewfinder

By: Kon

How cool would it be if you could take your photos that you have on Flickr and "place" them three-dimensionally into a map like Google Earth.
The Interactive Media Division at the University of Southern California are working on such an ambitious project. They have called it "Viewfinder". Once fully developed, Viewfinder aims to provide the possibility to superimpose your images into a 3D map and even overlay historic images over their present day locations.

You can watch their progress report here...

Designers: Brian Harsanto

By: Filip

Brian is an artist from Bandung City, in west Java, Indonesia. His wonderful design "Mother Vomit Earth" was selected as a Special Selection back in April 2007 from the Mother Nature competition.

We asked Brian a few questions recently...we hope you enjoy this mini interview.

Dan Bergeron

By: Kon

In terms of street art, here's a very original idea: Dan Bergeron shoots portraits of the residents of Regent Park, Toronto, and superimposes them on the buildings in the area.
As many of these are torn down and rebuilt, the idea is "to make the residents literally become part of the physical landscape".
The aim is to make aware and challenge the decision of the displacement of Regent Park's inhabitants as they are kicked out of their homes in order to make way for new projects...

Modernist Art in Naval Camouflage

By: Filip

Darkroastedblend has a great article over on their blog about Navy's attempt to use patterns to camouflage their naval force...inspired by the work of Modernists.

Here is a little extract from the text accompanying lots of images:
The Allies only turned to modern art out of desperation. German U-boats were sinking enormous amounts of shipping and there was no really effective defense against them. It is axiomatic that if you can't stop the people who are shooting at you, you should make it very hard for them to find you. Thus, camouflage.

Also, there is a bunch of content you can now see on the maps including youtube videos, photos, weather, picasa albums and a whole lot more.

Handwritten Newspaper

By: Kon

I recently came across 'The Musalman', the oldest Urdu daily newspaper in India and probably the only handwritten newspaper in the world. The paper was established in 1927 and is published in Chennai. Copies of this paper are shipped as far as Calcutta and Mumbay.
Four professional calligraphers spend three hours every day on each page.
I think it's a great feat concerning the precision and dedication needed for this task.
I also think calligraphy as such goes really well with our current competition :)
