Gordon Matta-Clark in Chicago

By: Kon

If you are living in Chicago, make sure you visit the Museum of Contemporary Art before 4th May 2008 and see the retrospective of Gordon Matta-Clark.
The American artist and architect worked all kinds of media including film and photography. After studying in Paris, he became aware of deconstructionism and the concept of détournement, the re-use of pre-existing artistic elements in a new ensemble. These theories later greatly influenced his work, as in his "building cuts" where he dissects abandoned buildings to reveal sections of floors, ceilings and walls.

Check out the Museum site for more info.

China Design Now

By: Kon

For all you lucky Londoners: China Design Now opened its doors to the public at the Victoria & Albert Museum two days ago. The show will continue until 13th June, so hopefully I'll get a chance to go and see it.
The exhibition looks at three cities- Shenzen, Shanghai and Beijing and at the  development in graphic and product design therein. Chinese design has changed a great deal due to global influences and a rediscovery of pre-Socialist traditional approaches. I'm sure it's an interesting and cool show!

Kröller-Müller Museum

By: Kon

Two days ago I went to the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands near Arnheim. The Museum, named after the collector Helene Kröller-Müller, is set in the huge Hoge Veluwe National Park in the south-east of the Netherlands. It houses the second biggest van Gogh collection in the world and has a considerable sculpture park around it. The building itself was designed by Henry van de Velde in 1938. The sculpture garden was added in 1961 and the new exhibition wing, designed by Wim Quist, opened in 1977. Here are a few pics i've taken ..and you can read more about the museum here...

V&A - China Design Now

By: Filip

If you find yourself in London from 15th March to 13th July then this exhibition is definetly worth checking out. Titled "China Design Now" exhibion is a representative of China's post-socialist contemporary art, design, cinema and architecture.

China Design Now @ V&A, London

This exhibition will take you on a journey along China’s coastal cities to experience the country’s creative landscape. The journey starts in the far south, where graphic designers in Shenzhen began to explore new directions in the early 1990s. Next we move up to Shanghai. Here consumerism and urban culture have combined to produce astonishing fashion and lifestyles. Finally, we travel to Beijing, where monumental architecture for the Olympic Games is transforming this ancient capital’s skyline. read more..

Interestingly enough to celebrate Chinese new year they've also made an effort to put this flash piece together where you can find out what sign you are. Cute but a little gimmicky. Anyway, check it out.

If you live in Berlin this is one exhibition definetly worth checking out. Yoshitaka Amano is having a solo exhibition in Michael Janssen gallery.

Amano, born in Shizuoka City, Japan, in 1952, who rose to fame via the creation of anime, manga and video game characters, began his career in Japan’s major cartoon studios in the mid 1970s. Sculpture projects '07

By: Kon

At the end of the month, the 10-yearly “sculpture projects“ in Münster close. I went there recently to have a look at what's on display. It's an interesting event because the whole city becomes the stage for established and not so established artists who install their sculptural pieces all over town. The whole thing is called projects because the result is somewhat an experiment in order to find out which pieces actually acquire the necessary sculptural quality- at least that's my impression. The successful ones are sometimes bought by the city and remain there for the public. Past artists include Claes Oldenburg, Keith Haring, Bruce Naumann and Richard Serra, so some of the “big” names have left their mark here.
The 30th September marks the end of this event with a big closing party, so if you're there, go and check it out.

CHINA 2007

By: Kon

Like I wrote last week, here are the pictures from the opening of the CHINA 2007 exhibition at the Raab Gallery last night. A good turnout, many of the Chinese artists were there, and the crowd was very interested. The feeling I got was that the art scene is developing in many different directions. There is no general "school" and I don't think that such a straightforward direction in development will establish itself soon. Much rather that several styles will become dominant and a few individuals will make their ways in whichever direction they take. The traditional painting is still strong, but elements of modern, abstract elements are visible already...
