The Earth Guide

By: Kon

Here is a truly beautiful site about our earth.
It calls itself the "Earth Guide" and  is made by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. The site is arranged around a "question map" which covers different topics and areas. You can find out a lot about the blue planet starting with its location in the milky way going to the depth of the oceans and the relative areas of land.

The site is beautifully animated, although the flash navigation can be a bit confusing at first...

It comes with a range of funny noises to enhance the tranquil feel of the site.

Something for a little evening browsing or a break over lunch :)

Designer's Lamps

By: Kon

Mark McKenna sells "Designer Emulation Kits" on his site, a do-it-yourself building kit of famous lamp designs. All the lamps run of a standard 9 volt battery and look really cool as small versions of their famous bigger brothers...

"The Designer Emulation Kits (DEK’s for short) are meant as the sincerest homage to some of the greatest modern designers of our time. The lamps and designers being “emulated” have a particular importance. They are represented in countless design tomes extolling the various movements, and they are held up as prime examples of “good design.” "

Endless drawing

By: Kon

This is brilliant: a site where anyone can continue working on an endless image. Your image has to connect to the one before, so the whole image looks like one continuous wallpaper.

I check it regularly to see how it is evolving. It's a cool idea and does actually get longer and longer... a huge online mural!

Friday Fun: Worst case scenarious

By: Kon

Something for Friday:

Here is a really cool and funny site which deals with all sorts of "worst case" scenarios and how to deal with them. There are hilarious situations like "How to control a runaway camel", situations that we really don't want to find ourselves in, like "How to Survive If Your Parachute Fails to Open" and stuff that will make you smile, like "How to Foil a UFO Abduction".

Some are really interesting, others will just make you laugh, but the site is well worth a visit on a relaxed afternoon.

My favourite is the one "How to Survive If You Are Caught Slacking". It comes with a nice drawing of the best sleeping position at your desk ;)

Ping-Pong door

By: kon

These two guys had a really neat idea. Looks like a lot of fun if you have a place that's big enough to play table tennis in...

designer's own words:
ready to build in ping pong table door. raising the handle allows you to swing the table and fasten it in position. Enjoy all the benefits of ping pong playing in your place, no matter how big it is. A conventional door connects rooms, this door connects people.

Planets and Moons

By: kon

I just love sites like these...

This always reminds of an astronomy teacher I used to have, who had a really fascinating way of explaining the relative sizes and distances of the planets in our solar system to us. I could spend hours looking at stuff like this!

Daily Minute

By: kon

This page is something for german speakers only, but a neat link all the same. It's basically a news flash where someone reads the main events of the day in 60 seconds. not really more than a soundbite, but mostly enough info to keep you up with daily events.
