We asked Gary, our Special Selection prize winner with his "Nature and Technology" tee design, about his work and where he gets his inspiration. Gary has submitted the largest number of designs to Allmightys. A  great variety and his style is always evident...lots of detail, colour and richness.

Enjoy..

What inspires you Gary?
I get inspired, when I watch movies and animations with great video effects and have social relevance. People around me also inspire me a lot.

Who are you favorite artists and why?
I have lots of favorite artists, some of the notable names are Escher- I like his impossible figures, and optical illusions, Rembrandt- his style in playing with light and shadow is great, and Alex Ross who changed the comic industry with his stunning realistic drawings.

How do you produce your artworks and what mediums do you use?
My artworks start from concept sketches in my head, then draw what I imagine using pen and ink. While drawing, I just let my imagination draw continuously, I use pen because when I make mistake, I don’t erase it, instead I make it into another design. I also use Adobe  Illustrator in making vector designs, and Adobe Photoshop in making graphic designs. Flash is what I use in making animations and also in making vector drawings.

What are the websites you visit regularly and where do you get your inspiration?
I regularly visit gaming websites like gamespot (www.gamespot.com/) where I get updates on latest games. I also visit The FWA: Favourite Website Awards (thefwa.com/) where there are lots of good web designs. I get my inspirations from everything around me, including people, events, nature and other stuff.

What do you do when you are not designing?
When I’m not designing, I play PC games and Nintendo DS. I also get inspirations and ideas from the games I play.

Do you think Allmightys has helped you become a better designer and how?
Yeah! Allmightys make my brains wheedle out artistic designs that make me a better designer. :) I also learn from the tips on forum discussions like color halftone filter that makes doing graphic design easy.

Anything else you would like to add?
Today, with lots of graphic softwares available, making graphic design is easier.

End.

Designers: SiClark

By: Filip

Continuing our mini interviews, this week we bring you Simon Clark aka SiClark.
Simon is an amaizing UK based illustrator/animator with some trully wonderful and unique style to his work. Make sure you also check out his website for more examples and wonderful animations.
SiClark won Special Selection in our "Mother Nature" competition back in April 2007 with his unique "Bad Planet" submission.

What inspires you Simon?

This is always a hard question to answer, mainly because I find it hard to articulate how I get inspiration. For lack of a better term it just comes to me. It can come from watching a film, hearing a certain piece of music or seeing a colour combination on a random building, any small thing like that will start the cogs in my mind and out comes an idea. I'm obsessed with trees, buildings and texture. This is because I grew up in the country and now live in London and find it impossible to do simple things as I always get fixated with detail.

Who are you favourite artists and why?

In terms of fine art I would have to say the Chapman Brothers as a lot of their work seems quite obsessive which I can relate to and most importantly, it makes me laugh whenever I go to one of their exhibitions. With regards to illustration I have a lot of artists that I admire but my mind is more visually orientated so I'm useless at remembering names. Tom Gauld and Sam Webber stick in my mind though.

How do you produce your artworks and what mediums do you use?

Pretty much everything in my work is created by hand and made seperately. All these elements are then whacked into Photoshop and arranged and ocassionally coloured. I always use pen and ink and then use any kind of material to get the effect or texture that I am after.

What are the websites you visit regularly and where do you get your inspiration?

I don't really use the web for inspiration I'm afraid.

What do you do when you are not designing?

I'm obsessed with my work so when I'm not creating anything I'm usually thinking about what I'm going to do next. I spend most of my free time going to gigs.

Do you think Allmightys has helped you become a better designer and how?

I've only done one t-shirt design for Allmightys so I can't really make that claim, if I did more then I'm sure it would help.

End.
