Turntable Design

By: Kon

Mike Disher's site is all about turntables. 5 years ago he started making these himself, and I have to say they look very cool- the see-through ones especially.
Turntables are something of a dying breed, with the exception of DJs of course, but for all of you who occasionally like to spin the decks, this is for you...

iPhone Guitar

By: Kon

If you are an avid iPhone user like Fil and me and also an apprentice or experienced guitar player (unlike Fil and me) then this might be for you. Here's an application that lets you practice those riffs and chords on your phone. It was developed as a Google Code project by a guy called Shinya Kasatan.

An antique music video

By: Kon

From Stewart Smith comes this video for Grandaddy's song "Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground)".

"Programmed entirely in Applesoft II on a vintage 1979 Apple with 48K of RAM, the music video is a beautifully mesmerizing experiment that reveals the capabilities of this vintage technology. Using a computer so old it only types in all caps and lacks a hard drive, a mouse and even up and down arrow keys, Stewart Smith was able to create an elegant type-based video utilizing code and techniques that today seem ancient."

Being an avid Grandaddy fan myself, I was thrilled to see this video that uses this antique technology in such a simple and beautiful way, capturing and transporting the mood and the essence of the song...

Well done, Stewart!

Critical Metrics

By: kon

Here's a really cool music site I found recently:

"Every week, artists, DJs, music tv networks, newspapers, magazines, retailers, and bloggers recommend hundreds of their favorite new songs.
Critical Metrics keeps track of recommendations and playlists across all media so you can easily find, try, and buy the best new music."

I think it's a brilliant music compandium. The selections are cool mostly and done by people who (again mostly) know what they are talking about.  You get a lot of background info too and, where available, a link to the youtube video.

My only problem is the buffering takes too long sometimes, but maybe my DSL is lame again ;)

Colour of my sound

By: kon

Have a look at this interesting little feature. When listening to music, did you ever think of what colour that song would be? Well, here's the place to find out...

"Synaesthesia is the mixing of the senses. Those affected by it hear colors, see sounds, and taste tactile sensations. When the two senses involved are sound and color, this phenomenon is no longer limited to synaesthetes: anyone, given a sound and time for contemplation, can ascribe color to that sound.
Often, these connections between sound and color will overlap from person to person. Color Of My Sound is an informal experiment to test that hypothesis. First, choose a sound category. Then, after listening, choose the color to which you are most strongly drawn. Give us your thoughts. Then, you can see how others voted for that particular sound."

You can also upload your own tunes and see what colour other people associate with it. Sweet!
