A Virtual Berlin Wall
By: Kon
Staying on the topic of the Wall, today I found a neat project that was founded and is run by Tamiko Thiel and Teresa Reuter. These two have launched the "Virtual Wall", a digital reconstruction of a segment of the Berlin Wall. The project area lies between Kreuzberg and Mitte. The aim is a 3D interactive digital installation that will show the development of the Wall and it's surroundings in this area through time. Views will be from he East and the West side, so the user can freely chose from which angle he or she wishes to take a look at this dividing structure. The installation will premiere in the Museum for Communication in Berlin on August 13, 2008 and will be exhibited from August 14 to September 7, 2008.
I'm intrigued... check out their page here

Viewfinder
By: Kon
How cool would it be if you could take your photos that you have on Flickr and "place" them three-dimensionally into a map like Google Earth.
The Interactive Media Division at the University of Southern California are working on such an ambitious project. They have called it "Viewfinder". Once fully developed, Viewfinder aims to provide the possibility to superimpose your images into a 3D map and even overlay historic images over their present day locations.
You can watch their progress report here...

Modernist Art in Naval Camouflage
By: Filip
Darkroastedblend has a great article over on their blog about Navy's attempt to use patterns to camouflage their naval force...inspired by the work of Modernists.
Here is a little extract from the text accompanying lots of images:
The Allies only turned to modern art out of desperation. German U-boats were sinking enormous amounts of shipping and there was no really effective defense against them. It is axiomatic that if you can't stop the people who are shooting at you, you should make it very hard for them to find you. Thus, camouflage.

GoogleMaps
By: Filip
We all know about googlemaps....but did you know that only recently google has added wikipedia entries to map searches?
Also, there is a bunch of content you can now see on the maps including youtube videos, photos, weather, picasa albums and a whole lot more.
Where before we would search google maps when we wanted to find a particularplace, now its a tool for exploration, reference and learning.
Go mapping...

Patterns of Allmightys Visitors
By: Filip
Here is something wonderful. These images are taken from google analytics we use here at Allmightys to monitor visits to the site. The pictures show all the places in the world visitors to Allmightys come from, including you.
We broke it down into few continents and you can see visitor locations from Europe, North America and the world. It is also safe to assume that google may not be right always and there is some data "uknown". These are all based on IPs so if there is some tunnelling going on via proxy servers then google would probably get confused and list some as coming from North America whilst in fact they may be located on a little island somewhere in the Atlantic (Lost).
Cool, eh!

All your thoughts in one place: Evernote
By: Filip
I have been using Evernote for over a month now and I have to say this is really one of the best note taking apps out there. This is not just because of the app but the fantastic integration with mobile devices, multiplatform, clipping web pages and much, much more.
about: Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at anytime, from anywhere.
Evernote is available for Mac and Windows, has a web app (automatically synced with your desktop), mobile app and iPhone web app. Taking your notes could not be easier, from using your desktop app to taking pictures with your phone and mailing the pics to the web app that is synced instantly with your desktop.
Evernote is curently in beta stage so you will need invites if you would like to try itout. I have 17 invites available so if you want to have a go, leave a comment and I will send you an invite.
The site has very good tutorials/ideas on how you can use Evernote. You can also check out rohdesign's public notebook SXSW Sketchnotes.

From Atoms To Patterns Exhibition
By: Filip
You live in London and need more inspiration for our current competition? Then maybe should pay a visit to Welcome Collection Gallery in Euston.
This exhibition explores the intriguing creations of the Festival Pattern Group - a unique project at the 1951 Festival of Britain involving X-ray crystallographers, designers and manufacturers. At the instigation of Dr Helen Megaw, a leading Cambridge scientist, diagrams of atomic structures inspired an eclectic array of patterns on curtains, wallpapers, carpets, lace, dress fabrics, ties, plates and ashtrays. read more here

Colour-shifting roads
By: Kon
As far as it comes to new ideas for the outside, how is this for something in the future? Strips of thermosensitive road varnish are painted on to the street and change colour when the temperature reaches freezing or other dangerous conditions.
Could be useful to pedestrians and motorists alike and is tested in France for durability and usability as we speak, but who knows if this ever reaches serial production.

Turntable Design
By: Kon
Mike Disher's site is all about turntables. 5 years ago he started making these himself, and I have to say they look very cool- the see-through ones especially.
Turntables are something of a dying breed, with the exception of DJs of course, but for all of you who occasionally like to spin the decks, this is for you...
