Barack in Berlin

By: Kon

Somewhat in tune with a.mar.illo's excellent weekly badge review yesterday, I want to showyou guys this badge that has apparently been around in Berlin since Obama appeared here last Thursday (although I haven't seen one). I agree, it lacks the true design quality, but I thought I'd share it with you nevertheless...

Enjoy :)

Handwritten Newspaper

By: Kon

I recently came across 'The Musalman', the oldest Urdu daily newspaper in India and probably the only handwritten newspaper in the world. The paper was established in 1927 and is published in Chennai. Copies of this paper are shipped as far as Calcutta and Mumbay.
Four professional calligraphers spend three hours every day on each page.
I think it's a great feat concerning the precision and dedication needed for this task.
I also think calligraphy as such goes really well with our current competition :)

April Fools online

By: Kon

Yesterday was April fools day, and I wonder how many of you were actually fooled :)
Here is a funny collection of yesterdays fools on the net. It's a fun browse- some of these are hilarious. My personal favourite is the BBC documentary on penguins that can fly. Or the new Google function that allows you to search for something one day in advance...

Guerrilla Gardeners : UK

By: Filip

Guerrilla Gardeners is a group of individuals with 171 people on their membership list who strike at night armed with shovels, shrubs and plants looking for areas of south london to brighten up.

Here is their latest effort:
I was invited to talk about guerilla gardening at the Port Eliot Lit Fest. A local tipped us off that the station had an orphaned platform, so Lyla 1046 and I dug out a fresh trench next to a smothered rose and in went two new mallow and some verbena. By mistake we also planted the MG in a boggy field.

Check them out here ..you can also make donations and take part yourself!

Pictures: Under the City : Tokyo Storm Water System

By: Filip

Continuing in the spirit of Big City Life, here are few photos of the incredible Tokyo Storm Water System.

About:
Brainchild of Japan Institute of Wastewater Engineering Technology (JIWET), this "sci-fi"-like installation consists of "five 32m diameter, 65m deep concrete containment silos, connected by 64 kilometers of tunnels 50 meters deep underground. The system is powered by 14000 horsepower turbines which can pump 200 tons of water a second into a nearby river."

This is me

By: Kon

Check out this short film on youtube by Sam Arthur.

The storyline is sad and comical at the same time. The film itself is very well scripted and executed. I especially like the cartoon elements in it.

I feel sorry for the guy though...

Friday Fun: Worst case scenarious

By: Kon

Something for Friday:

Here is a really cool and funny site which deals with all sorts of "worst case" scenarios and how to deal with them. There are hilarious situations like "How to control a runaway camel", situations that we really don't want to find ourselves in, like "How to Survive If Your Parachute Fails to Open" and stuff that will make you smile, like "How to Foil a UFO Abduction".

Some are really interesting, others will just make you laugh, but the site is well worth a visit on a relaxed afternoon.

My favourite is the one "How to Survive If You Are Caught Slacking". It comes with a nice drawing of the best sleeping position at your desk ;)
